The secret to great style is to feel good in what you wear

What to Wear on a Family Photoshoot

One of the most common questions I get from parents is, “What should we wear for our family session?” While I’m happy to offer some tips and ideas, what matters most is that you and your family feel like yourselves. These photos are meant to capture your unique personalities and the special moments you share, so I don’t want to dictate your wardrobe too much. However, if you’re looking to create a more styled and coordinated look for your photos, here are a few suggestions:

Choose a Colour Palette

Pick a few complementary colours and build everyone’s outfits around those. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to match exactly, but sticking to a palette can create a cohesive look. Instead of bright primary colours, which can be distracting or cause colour casts on the skin (especially red), consider more muted shades. Soft tones like blue-grey, cream, pink, or gentle greens can work beautifully. Richer colours like olive green, forest green, indigo blue, or dark purples can also make a striking impact, particularly when chosen to match the season or location of your session.

Layers and Textures:

Adding layers like cardigans, scarves, or jackets can add depth to your photos. Mixing different textures—like denim, knit, or lace—can also make the images more visually interesting.

Consider the Season:

Spring: Light pastels, floral patterns, and airy fabrics that reflect the fresh, bright feel of the season.

Summer: Breezy, breathable outfits in softer hues—think light blues, whites, and soft beiges. Sundresses and short sleeves are perfect for keeping cool during outdoor sessions.

Fall: Warm tones like burgundy, mustard, forest green, and plenty of cozy layers. Sweaters, plaid shirts, and boots can complement the rich colours of falling leaves.

Winter: Deeper colours (like navy, deep red) with warm coats, scarves, or hats. If it’s snowing, pops of white or cream can look stunning against a winter landscape

Comfort is Key

Above all, make sure everyone feels comfortable in their outfits. If you’re not comfortable, it will show in the photos, and we want everyone to feel relaxed and at ease. Remember, these photos are about capturing your family as you are in this moment. Whether you opt for a styled look or embrace the everyday details that make your family unique, the most important thing is that your personalities shine through.

Final Checks Before You Leave

Test Run: Try on each outfit (including shoes!) a day or two beforehand to make sure there are no last-minute surprises like missing buttons or stains.

Pack Essentials: Pack small necessities like hair ties, a brush, and maybe some touch-up makeup if you like.

Comfort Items for Kids: If you have young children, consider bringing their favourite toy or snack to keep them happy and relaxed.

Positive Mindset: Remember, the most beautiful photos come from genuine smiles and natural moments. A relaxed, upbeat mood can help make your photoshoot a priceless family memory.

Things to Avoid

Large Graphics or Brand Logos: Clothing with large graphics or brand logos have a tendency to date a photo and take attention away from your faces.

Matching Outfits: Styling the entire family in identical outfits, like white tops and jeans, can look a bit dated and may not reflect each person in your family’s unique style. Instead, aim for coordination —using the same colour scheme or complementary colours—without looking completely uniform.

Too Many Patterns: While patterns can add interest, too many can make the photo look busy. If you do want patterns, limit them to one or two people. A good rule of thumb might be: one or two people in a pattern, balanced out with solid colours for everyone else.

Ill-Fitting or Restrictive Clothing: Choose outfits that fit well and allow you to move freely. You want to be able to run around with the kids and cuddle comfortably—nobody wants to be preoccupied with adjusting straps or clothing that’s too tight.

Should You Book Hair and Makeup for Your Photoshoot?

If styling your own hair tends to be frustrating or time consuming, it might be easier to book an appointment with a professional. A stylist can help you achieve a natural look that brings out your features without feeling overdone. Ultimately, the goal is to make you feel your best. Whether you go for a full glam approach, something subtle, or completely natural, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Guys Matter Too

Male family members, including older boys or teens matter too! A neat button-down with well-fitting jeans can work brilliantly. Layering a collared shirt under a sweater adds texture and interest, and it’s a practical choice if the weather is unpredictable. Also, try to clear your pockets of larger items, like wallets or phones, to avoid disrupting your silhouette. If hats are your thing, a cap or beanie can look great—just be mindful that it doesn’t cast too much of a shadow on your face.

Have Fun!

Your family photoshoot is about capturing real moments and the love you share. If it makes your child happy to wear their favourite sparkly headband, then wear it! Relaxed, happy expressions will outshine any outfit details, so don’t sweat the small stuff. The best photos are from families who feel at ease enough to laugh, play, and just enjoy themselves.
