The secret to great style is to feel good in what you wear

What to wear on a family Photoshoot

One of the most common questions I get from parents is, "What should we wear for our family session?" While I’m happy to offer some tips and ideas, what matters most is that you and your family feel like yourselves. These photos are meant to capture your unique personalities and the special moments you share, so I don’t want to dictate your wardrobe too much. However, if you’re looking to create a more styled and coordinated look for your photos, here are a few suggestions:

Choose a Colour Palette

Pick a few complementary colours and build everyone’s outfits around those. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to match exactly, but sticking to a palette can create a cohesive look. Instead of bright primary colours, which can be distracting or cause colour casts on the skin (especially red), consider more muted shades. Soft tones like blue-grey, cream, pink, or gentle greens can work beautifully. Richer colours like olive green, forest green, indigo blue, or dark purples can also make a striking impact, particularly when chosen to match the season or location of your session.

Avoid Distracting Patterns:

While some patterns can work well, it’s usually best to avoid anything too busy or with large logos, as they can take the focus away from your faces.

Layers and Textures:

Adding layers like cardigans, scarves, or jackets can add depth to your photos. Mixing different textures—like denim, knit, or lace—can also make the images more visually interesting.

Comfort is Key

Above all, make sure everyone feels comfortable in their outfits. If you’re not comfortable, it will show in the photos, and we want everyone to feel relaxed and at ease. Remember, these photos are about capturing your family as you are in this moment. Whether you opt for a styled look or embrace the everyday details that make your family unique, the most important thing is that your personalities shine through.

Things to Avoid:

Large Graphics or Brand Logos: Clothing with large graphics or brand name logos can date your photos and become distracting. They tend to stand out and draw attention away from your faces.

Matching Outfits: Styling the entire family in identical outfits, like white tops and jeans, can look a bit dated and won’t reflect your family’s unique style. Instead, aim for coordination without complete matching.

Too Many Patterns: While patterns can add interest, too many can make the photo look overly busy. A good rule of thumb is to have one person in a pattern, maybe two at most, and balance it with solid colours for everyone else.

Ill-Fitting or Restrictive Clothing: Choose outfits that fit well and allow you to move freely. You want to be able to run around with the kids and cuddle comfortably. Avoid tops or dresses that might lead to uncomfortable situations like visible bra straps.

Should You Book Hair and Makeup for Your Photoshoot?

If styling your own hair tends to be frustrating, it might be easier to book an appointment with a professional. They can help you achieve a natural look that enhances your features without feeling overdone. Ultimately, the decision is about what makes you feel your best. Whether you go for full glam, something more understated, or completely natural, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident during your photoshoot.
